THE LEARNING CENTER: A PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES
Program Description
The program provides support services for students with learning disabilities as they attend regular Academy classes.  The program offers a more structured learning environment, as well as the opportunities to meet regular classroom expectations.  Students enroll in four or five academic courses each semester and receive tutoring, depending on individual needs, for up to four hours each week from a content-area specialist.  They also receive one additional tutoring session in reading, math, or other area of special need.
Students enrolled in the Learning Center may take major tests in an extended-time format when oral assistance is available.  All Brenau students have an academic advisor; students in the Learning Center program receive additional assistance in this area.  For students with reading deficit who qualify, taped textbooks can be borrowed from Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic.
Admissions Policies
Learning Center students must apply to the admissions office and complete all regular admissions procedures.  In addition, applicants must provide a recent psychological educational report and be interviewed at the Learning Center.  The psychological report must include scores on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised or the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised and achievement scores in both reading and math.  The report must include a statement directly concerning a diagnosis.
Program Costs
Students in the Learning Center program pay the usual Brenau comprehensive fee that covers tuition, room, and board.  Additionally, Level I students pay $2,250 per semester for five hours of weekly academic tutoring.  Level II students pay $1,450 per semester for three hours of weekly academic tutoring.  Students who approach self-sufficiency may move to Level III with one hour of tutoring each week for $900 per semester.  The Academy strongly recommends Learning Center students begin with Level I services.
